When I read your title, I thought of "The Lottery" RIGHT away.
Another I HATED for its ending was "The Lady or the Tiger"
Another one I'll NEVER forget - - - "Specialty of the House"
All these were read in my HS English classes.

"The Gift of the Magi" Was that O. Henry too?
There's one about girls on a planet where the sun shines only every 7 years so these girls have never seen it...the new girl is from another place and has seen the sun. She gets locked in a closet and when the sun shines, the others forget her and she spends all day in there...it's awful.
